Eleanor Perry/Pizey

Ruth started contractions on Thursday night, which died down by Friday afternoon, but by 3am Saturday morning we were up at the John Radcliffe Hospital with contractions about seven minutes apart. However we were sent back home, to return at 4am Sunday morning, by which time Ruth was 7cm dilated - to the astonishment of the midwife Anne-Marie.

Some three hours in the birthing pool passed quite well, Ruth again amazed the midwives (Laura had joined us by now) as she was fully dilated without the need for more than gas-and-air.

The second stage labour however took a long time, four hours, so it was only cynicism which made us suspect that the doctors wanted to intervene so as not to miss the England/Sweden match. Fortunately our lovely midwife Laura wasn't into football and had Ruth squat with me supporting her. Ruth was very tired by this time, but at two minutes to twelve midday Sunday 2nd June 2002 Eleanor arrived, weighing six pounds and fourteen ounces.
